An Underground History of American Education
Chapter 1 and 2 by J. T. Gatto

“Whoever control the image and information of the past determines what and how future generations will think...” George Orwell, 1984 (1949).
The people that controls and have all the information of the past will determines how the future live life. In order to predict the future someone must know the past. With the controls of image and information it will defines how the future scholars will think and act in many ways. In a similar way the people who controls of the present will define how people see the past and how it was different or the same.

Gatto is a former teacher who left teaching in the classroom the same year he won the educator of the year.  He announced his decision to quit teaching in the classroom in a letter tittle “I quit, I think”. He presents his view of education in American society.  His view on modern society in America is different from other authors that has been in the school system in the United Sates. He argues that education strategies promoted by the government and business leaders for more than a century keeps power for only a few. I concur with Gatto because all the people that attend school to learn something and then enter work field only get a small percent of the money and others power. They are only making the rich richer.
The top percent controls the rest of the people around the world. This has been going on for years and years and it will continue to be like the way it is for more years to come. Once someone in power it will be difficult to overcome these organizations.  In school students does not get all the education need to fulfil their dreams. They only get enough to fill the jobs that are needed or must be filled in the economy.

Our problem is understanding forced schooling stems from an inconvenient fact. That shows it is a wrong idea from a human perspective but meanwhile it is a great idea from a system point of view because people are being force without them knowing that. That puts a lot of pressure on parents and students to attend school.  Many had questions regarding the public school system and how it had a very huge power the students and parents.
For example, in the book Gatto explains how he was close to a young girl name Bianca. She was yelled at by the assistant principal at the school. He felt so bad for Bianca because he felt that she didn’t not deserve what was said to her and how it said to the innocent little girl. The assistant principal said to her “Bianca, you animal, shut up!”  Bianca was shaken after she hear these harsh words for

  1. I agree with the introduction that people that controls and have all the information of the past will determines how the future live life and people who controls the present will define how people see the past because with information and knowledge we can change our future and fix our past.

  2. Urvi, what a smart chap you are. The public school system is "Super" corrupt, and the bottom line is money. The people who suffer are the children. One policy after another and it has'nt gotten us anywhere.
