REFLECTION FOR AMERICAN PUBLIC SCHOOL
Hubermann Ermeus
In the 1960’s it became very
fashionable to ridicule assimilative function of the public school in America.
The functions of the public schools in America were different then it is now.
It used to be segregated and not many people would support it. Of the greatest
thing that happened in the public back then is Americanizing the foreigners
into the public schools. It success in Americanizing the immigrants was very
important to family that never thought they would be accepted as Americans in
the United States.
The first half of the twentieth
century was a time of huge expansion of the American public school. The United
States is a democracy states. The school were here to teach skills and
knowledge that is required for people who are living in a democratic industrial
society such the United States and other places around the world. The
population were rapidly growing and diversity is spreading at a very fast pace.
One thing that did stand out to me
was the IQ test that were given to children starting to from kindergarten to
high school seniors. The IQ test were given to any student no matter if they
speak English or any other languages. It was require that they take the test.
Majority of student s didn’t not speak English because of the parents just move
her to look for better opportunities for them. The test follow them for the
rest of their lives. If they did well they stick with it and also if they did
horrible they would stick it. Most people demanded to ban the IQ test because
it was unfair. The parents and student had no say.
image above shows how families from different part of the world come to the United States to earn an education where they believe all the freedom were.the Mexican and other foreigners family had to step up for their child in order for them to avoid the IQ test which was not in their advantage.
I feel that many immigrant students were at disadvantage because of influence in English. It was unfair to give them IQ test in English which they would barely comprehend.
