HUBERMANN ERMEUS

On September 2008, I moved from Haiti to the United States, I wasn’t able to speak or read a word in English. I only read and speak French Creole. It was a new beginning for me. I had to learn how to read and speak English just I did learn how to speak.  My first time holding and trying to read a book was at four years old.  The person who help me to learn how to read was my big brothers because my parents weren’t able to do so.  Both of my parents quit school at a very early age to make sure my older brothers and sisters have a better living.
I was highly encourage to learn how to read because my parents couldn’t read to me at times. They told me that if I didn’t know how to read people will like me. They will not treat me well as they treat others with respect and love.  The person who inspired me was my parents because being able to read and write is necessary in society and they couldn’t do it made their life harder. So, I didn’t want to be in the same situation. They supported me by buying books and taking me to local library to read books that they could not afford.
The earliest experience with literacy was I wasn’t able to pronounce word clearly and I stutter because I was nervous. My flow of speech was very slow because I was afraid t read in front of people. This made a better reader now because as time go on I learned that I have to do it.
I began to feel literate at the age of 7. It happened because of all the training and support from family members because I did not go to day care. I stayed home from the age of 0 to 4. My parent did not have the money to send me and my brothers to daycare.
As a literate person today it feel great. It helps to express feeling and point of view to most people in society. In today economic/society if a person is unable to read they are not able to get jobs and do anything by themselves. Being literate is very important in the time we are living now. We have all cellphones that required to be literate to function the cellphones and to communicate with other people. We continually to use literacy in our everyday live to better our live and save time. What continually to inspire my literacy development is my job, school and sports because most of them required a lot reading and speaking.
